The Czech language belongs to the Slavic languages group or, to be specific, to the West Slavic languages.
The modern Czech language features a very complex stylistic structure. So, the following styles are found in special and everyday use:
• literary language – cestina spisovna. This language is a written and codified but not a closed one;
• bookish language – knizni cestina. Like to the Russian language, the bookish language is similar to the literary one, but it is complemented by lots of obsolete words;
• ordinary language – hovorova cestina. The language used in everyday life, oral communication, even in business meetings. Though it is an everyday life language, it does not include vulgarisms or dialect components;
• common Czech language – obecna cestina. More than 2/3 of Czechia population use the common Czech language for communication, and it rapidly penetrates into the local media displacing the literary language. Moreover, the common Czech it is already found in literature.
Interesting facts about the Czech language:
• The Czech and Russian languages are very similar: many words have the same roots, only the mid vowel is omitted in Czech words. For example: город – grad.
• In the XIX century, only 15% of Czechia inhabitants spoke the Czech language.
• The @ symbol sounds as “marinated herring” in the Slovak and Czech languages.
